What would become of a spinning loom designed to weave a four-sided carpet? The footage in this film was made in my studio and looking out over the balcony as the seasons rolled and a form grew.

With thanks to the artistic director Roshanak Zangeneh, editor Nour Emad and sound engineer Moustafa Shaaban Abdelhamed.

By the Autumn of 2024 the loom was ready to be taken to ARD Art Institution. I wove its final woollen millimetres during the opening of the exhibition, Lis - a - ma hel sitch / لسّه متحلش / Yet not finished.

A few days later the loom was opened out to its full length during an evening of conversation between curator Farida Youssef, artist rana elnemr, myself and people who had come to join us.

When we met the day before, Rana suggested to Farida and I that we send her any short sections of text - any notes after studio visits, working thoughts or whatsapp exchanges - that we felt might be relevant. She rose early the next morning to combine what we had given her with her own reflections to make an adventurous performative script. We rarely read our own words, instead speaking those of the other two participants.

Thank you to Rana, Farida and everyone who shared their thoughts.

A reflection rana captured at ARD which contains the early and late days of the loom. The shot on screen shows me using a four metre loop of cloth to decide the circumference of its ‘mouth’. I wanted it to be able to stand up and be laid out in it.

With thanks to the Mostafa Mostafa Abdel Aty (picture 1 ), Mohammed Helmy (2) and Roshanak Zangeneh (3) for documenting the events.
